My daughter Emily had always been a part of the Rutgers/Embrace Kids’ Dance Marathon that helps children with cancer and other chronic diseases. Every year Emily’s dancing school would perform at the dance marathon. We never imagined that one day, our child, would be receiving support from Embrace Kids. However, that day ultimately arrived. In March of 2010 Emily was told, “You have cancer.” Her entire life leading up to that point was one of perfect health. She was a dancer, she was fit, and she very rarely ever got sick. At this moment in our lives, our relationship with Embrace Kids changed.

Embrace Kids was there for us. Embrace Kids met us at Emily’s first treatment at RWJUH. There is so much support, emotional and otherwise, that Embrace Kids provided our family this past year. Some has been gift cards for the hospital cafeteria, gift cards for Emily to use for the prom, tickets to Rutgers football games and holiday parties. The support didn’t end there, they also arranged for us to meet and go bowling with some NFL athletes, and they provided financial support for a family vacation. But most recently Embrace Kids flew Emily to Montana to attend Camp Mak-A-Dream for an inspiring week dealing with adolescence and cancer. Most of all Embrace Kids has provided Emily and our family with caring, compassion, comfort and emotional support through this time in our lives.

Cancer is something you never want to see in a child, especially your own.  But with Embrace Kids by our side this past year, we were able deal with it with less stress.  We are truly grateful to Embrace Kids for being there for Emily and our family.
