Enhancing the Quality of Life

Testimonials from Our Patient Families

Savion

Our son's name is Savion. He is a very energetic, happy, entertaining, little boy who lights up any room. He's not shy and will sing and dance for anyone. That is why you can tell when Savion is not feeling well. It's been almost four years since we learned our son has sickle beta thalassemia. It was so overwhelming to us, hearing about all of the things this disease entailed. Savion will have this for the rest of his life.

Shortly after Savion's diagnosis, we were introduced to the Embrace Kids Foundation. They invited our family to their annual walk and the rest is history. We have been walking as Savion's Sunrays ever since. Their events such as the walk, holiday party, and most importantly, Sickle Cell Education Night allow us to positively involve our entire family with Savion's disease. Their was a science fair at last year's Sickle Cell Education Night. Our boys won second place. We plan on taking first place this year. We were even asked to unveil the first Sickle Cell Awareness Commemorative Stamp - how exciting!

When in the hospital, we always saw Randi or Priscilla's familiar face. They would ask us if we were all right and if they could do anything for us. The Embrace Kids Foundation helped us with some of our bills and gave us gift cards for groceries - but most importantly, they lifted our spirits. What a humbling experience it is to receive help when you truly need it. In October of 2005 we decided to give back, and held our first Dinner Dance Auction. We only raised about $2,000, but to us giving back to the Embrace Kids Foundation was priceless.

Last year, Savion encountered many painful episodes called "crises." This meant mom and dad had to take off from work to help care for Savion. Unfortunately, both my husband and I lost our jobs last year.

When you feel like no one understand what you are going through, they reassure you that someone does. We are truly blessed to have the Embrace Kids Foundation. They are a second family to us.
