It has been over a year since our daughter, Tatiana, lost her battle with leukemia and my wife, Cecelia and I have been asked to reaffirm our commitment to the PACCT program.
Reflecting back to the days when we utilized PACCT opens up a plethora of memories - some are painful and some gratifying. The first thing that comes to our mind was the complete dedication of the PACCT nurses. These are special people who handle our special patients. Many families, such as ours, have periods of treatment that allow our children to go home for a while. In Tatiana's case, it occurred several times. Having the same nurses that cared for her in the hospital also come into our home to solicit the same kindness and dedication to her in her own home was heartwarming. These check-ups are still the best initiatives of the program. So simple, but extremely effective!
Many times, these nurses - Robyn, Katie, Pam, Lori and Lisa - went out of their way to come by the house to check up on Tatiana, making sure she was getting out of bed, taking her meds, eating, etc. Even on a holiday! What more can we say about the love, concern and dedication that these nurses have for our children!
Tatiana so loved her "adoptive" family, that when there were no other options left to her prognosis, she chose to remain in Hem-Onc, close to the nurses who cared for her so lovingly throughout her ordeal. The nurses administered pain-free medication to Tatiana so she was able to move onto her next journey peacefully and with dignity. Robyn, Donna and Christine were with us when our beautiful girl passed. For that we will always be grateful.
Please keep this program for all of the children that may unfortunately be stricken with a childhood cancer. They will need the kindness, warmth and gentleness of someone who truly cares, and these are the nurses and counselors of the PACCT program.
